Commissioner’s Bid to Make a Mark


AUSTRALIA’S first Small Business Commissioner has built respect but the limitations of the role are still very public.

The role itself has no formal power to resolve disputes – a matter of importance given the impact of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission and the Australian Taxation Office on all businesses – and its lack of legislative backing could mean the position disappears overnight, the sad fate that befell Queensland’s Commissioner.

The role also has limitations when it comes to Australia’s family business sector, Family Business Australia chief executive Philippa Taylor says.
