Small business finally has a national profile, but will it have the power?

The decision of Prime Minister Gillard to appoint a Federal Small Business Commissioner is greeted with a warm welcome which can be said to indicate the growing interest of the country in the small business sector.  The next concern is naturally to ask what exactly are the duties and responsibilities of this officer.  Advocacy groups primarily encourage that he “fight red tape” in the bureaucracy and at the same time, there are calls for an alignment of state and federal law.  They suggest that the federal commissioner should be a mediator in disputes between small business and federal government agencies.
