Mediator Details

Tim Pilbrow, PhD

I am a mediator and organizational culture consultant helping teams, workgroups, organisations and communities work through conflict to regain trust and build compassionate and constructive engagement. I offer workplace mediation, neighbourhood and community mediation, and Indigenous mediation services.

Finding creative and constructive ways to address conflict empowers individuals in conflict to better manage their own responses to conflict situations, collaborate on solutions, and restore damaged relationships. Conflict is often an early warning signal about systemic and structural problems within a community or organisation, and working through conflict can lead to useful change in the community or organisational environment.

I have always been deeply curious about people and communities, and the way language and culture are constantly being shaped through social interactions. This led me to study linguistics (BA Honours, Monash U) and anthropology (PhD, NYU).

Along the way I realized that I am a design-oriented systems thinker, and my real passion is helping organizations create better alignments between systems and the people that use them. This led me seek further training in Transformative Mediation, the Lewis Deep Democracy method of facilitation, user experience design, and collaborative engagement (Strategic Doing).

I also have a background in applied anthropological work with Aboriginal communities in southeastern Australia, helping them mobilize cultural knowledge for the purposes of land justice (native title claims) and cultural heritage management.
